Normal wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What does snake feces look like?
Have you ever imagined what snake feces looks like? If so, then it might be a rare thought. Most people do not think much about snake droppings and may not even recognize it whenever they come across it. If you think you may have a snake residing on your property, one way you can identify it is from its droppings. Interestingly, it's somewhat similar to the droppings of other reptiles like lizards or geckos. Since snake feces is rare to come across, it takes a special eye to notice it. Snakes only defecate after an entire meal is fully digested. Snakes use an opening called a cloaca for defecation. In addition to defecation, the cloaca is also used to reproduce and excrete urates, equivalent to urine. Since they defecate after a meal is fully digested, their bowel movement may take a few days or even weeks, depending on the size of the meal consumed and the weather conditions.

How to identifying snake feces from other reptile feces
If you've ever imagined what snake feces looks like, we've got an answer for you. Snake droppings are somewhat tubular and have tapered ends. Snakes can either excrete one piece or several. The feces of smaller snakes typically measure not more than ½-inch lengthwise, while that of the larger species are a bit larger than that of small snakes. Since snakes depend largely on enzymatic digestion, the feces may also contain some pieces of undigested food remains such as teeth, fur, or even claws because they swallow their prey whole. Since snakes only have one opening for excretion, snake urine is excreted together with the feces. Instead of coming out as a liquid, the urine comes out in the form of a paste that later solidifies. The dehydrated or solid form of the urine is called urates. A snake's urates can either be white or pale yellow. Usually, they dry up after excretion to form a substance that looks like chalk or white rocks.

Where will I find snake feces?
Have you ever imagined where a snake will go to defecate? Snakes can defecate anywhere they go. However, it's not unusual to spot snake droppings in places with overgrown vegetation like an untrimmed yard, in log piles, around rocks, or even against the sides of your building. If you frequently spot the droppings, it may not be snake feces as they do not defecate as often as other animals do. Usually, after a snake defecates, it is ready for its next meal.

NOTE: If you spot snake droppings, do not touch it, especially if you locate it in narrow or hard-to-see spaces. If you are very concerned with it, use a snake hook to turn it over and wear the necessary personal protective gear should the animal be within the location you spotted the droppings. Once you are confident that you have seen snake droppings in your home, start preparing for snake removal. You can remove the snake if you have the necessary tools and equipment or contact a professional snake removal service.
